UPDATE ON cOVID-19

(Last updated: March 9, 2020)

Current status

The Washington Internship Institute is closely monitoring the COVID-19 (coronavirus) situation in the Washington, DC region. While new cases have been confirmed in Maryland, Virginia, and the District, there is no reason to believe that our students and staff are at a higher risk for contracting the virus, especially because they are not members of groups at higher risk for contracting the virus. We are recommending that students closely monitor their health for flu-like symptoms if they have been to events or places where persons with COVID-19 have been known to visit and to contact us immediately if any symptoms arise. Thus far, none of our students or staff members have notified us that they are exhibiting symptoms.

The CDC and the DC Department of Health has not recommended canceling any classes or events, but we will remain vigilant in monitoring the situation and their recommendations.

PREVENTION

Our office building's janitorial staff is reviewing protocols and stepping up cleaning of commonly used surfaces, and we are stepping up cleaning of commonly used surfaces as well. We recommend that students follow suggestions from the DC Department of Health (https://coronavirus.dc.gov/), including:

  • Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds multiple times a day. An alcohol-based hand sanitizer can be used if soap and water are not available

  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands

  • Avoid close contact with people Who are sick

  • Stay home when feeling sick

  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces

We will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide updates. Please contact us with any questions you have.

Sincerely,

Gregory M. Weight, Ph.D.
President and Chief Executive Officer
